Consorzio Armatori Ferroviari was founded in 2001 in shape of consortium of Societies - Società Consortile per Azioni (S.C.p.A.) -Permanent Consortium - in order to create a key figure, in terms of sinergy and competition, in the market of the railway work.

The Italian railway network consists of over 27.000 km. of "main" railtracks dedicated to transportation and of nearly 4.000 km. of "secondary" railtarcks.
Properly qualified players, as pro required standards, attend the maintenance and construction of the rail lines.
The railway or railroad is a land transport infrastructure, laid down for trains movement for passengers travelling and / or goods handling.
It is composed of the railway superstructure (ballast and rail) laid down on the body road.
The railtrack is made up of two metal rails, supported and secured on wood , iron or concrete sleepers or, in the latest executions on a prestressed concrete plateau, which hold them and keep them parallel to each other at the same distance (gauge).
Rails, sleepers and ballast formed what is called the railway infrastructure installations.
The track is a complex structure in which the interaction between the basic components and accessories interact with the environment.
Maintenance activities are focused on thepreservation of the efficiency of the whole railwaysystem, which involves and affects issues of general interest.
Depending on the type and purpose of work maintenance activites are divided into ordinary and extraordinary ones.
Ordinary maintenance is typical of the types of maintenance work performed on the railway lines aimed to:
• maintain the original integrity and ensure the life expectation of the rail tracks
• maintain or restore the rail tracks
• contain the normal degradation due to usage
• to deal with accidental events.
The extraordinary maintenance is typical of the type of maintenance work non-recurring and non-repeatable. It is essential to extend the life and / or improve the efficiency, reliability, productivity, maintainability and inspectionability. The most significant extraordinary maintenance’s project is the railway renewal. The renewal takes place when the railway has reached the end of its service life or when it is no longer able to guarantee high standards of safety and maintainability due to the stresses born during the railway practice.
The main activities of each company and then by the Consortium are:
• railway renewal;
• maintenance railway;
• railway new construction and renewal;
• replacing existing ballast and replenishing with fresh gravel, ballast levelling, tamping and profiling;
• quays regulation platform;
• regulation of internal stresses on the track for the composition of long welded rail;
• supply of materials necessary for the renewal of the railway line.
